Steve Schwartz and Alicia Yeo to Present at 2024 AIRROC Summer Membership Meeting

July 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Steve Schwartz and Alicia Yeo will present at the AIRROC Summer Membership Meeting on July 17th.

The panel, “Lawyers Beware: Ethical Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them,” will discuss common ethical issues faced by in-house and outside lawyers. Topics will include issues raised by conflicts of interest and in connection with litigation and arbitration. Steve and Alicia will be joined by Jeff Burman (Fortitude Re) for the presentation.

Gretta Walters Joins PLI International Arbitration 2024 Program Faculty

June 2024— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will join the Practising Law Institute’s faculty for their “International Arbitration 2024” program taking place Tuesday, June 18th . The program, designed for private practitioners, in-house counsel, and other professionals involved in the arbitration of international disputes, will take place online and in the PLI New York office.

Gretta will speak on the panel “Artificial Intelligence and International Arbitration” with Stan Putter (HBN), Miroslava Schierholz (ICDR) and Diora Ziyaeva (Dentons). The session will cover:

  • Understanding how AI will impact international arbitration;
  • Recognizing whether AI is open to abuse in the international arbitration arena;
  • And appreciating whether AI will improve the international process.

Yasmine Lahlou and Andy Frischknecht Join Kluwer Arbitration Panel “The After Life of Arbitral Proceedings: Finding Finality”

June 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Yasmine Lahlou and Andy Frischknecht will join the Wolters Kluwer Arbitration panel session “The After Life of Arbitral Proceedings: Finding Finality” on Tuesday, June 11th. The virtual panel, taking place at 11AM EST, will explore finality and enforceability from various perspectives.

Expert speakers will touch upon the lis pendens doctrine, and how it may come into play to strike a balance between the authority of courts and arbitral tribunals while arbitration proceedings are ongoing. They will also consider the afterlife of an arbitral award once it is issued, including the various grounds of the New York Convention that can be invoked to permit a party to resist its enforcement when it is presented to a national court.

Additional panelists include Gabriel Fusea (Freshfields) and Alicja Zielińska-Eisen (Queritius). The discussion will be moderated by Kiran Nasir Gore (Kiran N Gore). All speakers are (co-) authors of Practical Insights available on Kluwer Arbitration.

James Hosking Joins Bucharest Arbitration Days

June 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will take part in Bucharest Arbitration Days June 6th-June 7th in Bucharest, Romania. James will join Monique Sasson (Arbitra), Dr. Diora Ziyaeva (Dentons) and Sebastian Lukic (Schoenherr) for the panel “Arbitration and Courts: Support, Supervision or Selection?”. The discussion will be moderated by Jonathan Wood (President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Chair of RPC’s International Arbitration practice).

Bucharest Arbitration Days will discuss ethics and conflicts in international arbitration; the evolving relationship between arbitration and courts; the diversity in arbitration from the perspective of diversity of seats and arbitration institutions and the ongoing discussion on evidence and the impact of technology on it. May Khoury Joins London International Disputes Week Panel on Saudi Awards and Judgements

June 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s May Khoury will join the London International Disputes Week event “Saudi Arabia: A deep dive into enforcement under the NY Convention in Saudi Arabia and enforcement of Saudi Awards and Judgements in the U.S. and U.K.” on Thursday, June 6th.

The event will include deep-dive into enforcing U.K. and U.S. based Court judgments and international arbitral awards in Saudi Arabia and KSA based international arbitral awards in the U.K. and U.S. under the New York Convention, with a particular focus on issues that may arise and what in-house counsel and practitioners should be aware of in drafting arbitration agreements and enforcing or challenging arbitral awards.

May will be joined by Drew Holiner (Monckton Chambers), Dr. Ahmad Alkhamees (Harasani & Alkhamees Law Firm), Dr. Hamid Harasani  (Harasani & Alkhamees Law Firm), Christian P. Alberti (Saudi Centre for Commercial Arbitration) and Tatiana Minaeva (RPC).

Gretta Walters Joins London International Disputes Week Panel on International Boutiques

June 2024— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will join the London International Disputes Week event “Litigation Boutiques in London and New York: 15 Years On” on Thursday, June 6th. The panel will consist of three elite boutique firms from London and New York as they discuss their appeal 15 years after launch.

Additional speakers include Justin Sher (Sher Tremonte), Ellen-Louise Moens (CANDEY) and Ashkhan Candey (CANDEY). Alex Cook KC (4 Stone Buildings) will moderate the discussion.

Gretta Walters Speaks at the 38th AAA-ICDR – ICC – ICSID Joint Colloquium on International Arbitration

May 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters spoke at the 38th AAA-ICDR – ICC – ICSID Joint Colloquium on International Arbitration on Tuesday, May 21st in Washington, D.C.

Gretta participated in the panel “Enter the Shark Tank: Judging the Most Impactful Innovations in Arbitral Practice” which brought together arbitrators and practitioners to share their proposals for innovative tools to modernize international arbitration— particularly with respect to time and cost. The session used a Shark Tank-style setup with panelists presenting pitches and judges deciding on their top choice. Guled Yusuf (Allen & Overy) and Katie Gonzalez (Cleary Gottlieb) joined Gretta as the pitchers while Eduardo Zuleta (Arbitration Chambers), Marinn Carlson (MCarlson Arbitration PLLC) and Theresa Coetzee (Marriott International) acted as judges.

For over forty years, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, the International Chamber of Commerce International Court of Arbitration, and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association have co-sponsored the Joint Colloquium on International Arbitration. The Colloquium featured updates on trends and initiatives from the three institutions, interactive sessions on issues at the forefront of commercial and investment arbitration, and an opportunity to network with practitioners and arbitrators from around the world. Anibal Sabater to Join MIAS and Friends LATAM Tour 2024

May 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will join the Miami Arbitration Society (MIAS) and Friends Second Annual LATAM Tour: Recent Trends and Developments in Commercial Arbitration in Mexico, Central America, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala, and Chile taking place on Wednesday, May 22nd.

MIAS and Friends LATAM Tour provides an update from leading practitioners in the region on the current state of arbitration. It will be a brief but substantive informational session covering legislative and judiciary developments, state disputes; changes in local regulations and institutional rules; enforcement and current trends. Among the group, Anibal will share “A New York Perspective: How commercial arbitration in LATAM appears from an external vantage point.”

Gretta Walters to Speak at 2024 American Bar Association International Law Section Annual Conference

May 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters is set to speak in Washington, D.C. at the 2024 American Bar Association International Law Section Annual Conference on Friday, May 10th.

Gretta will join Luis M. Martinez (Vice President, International Centre for Dispute Resolution, American Arbitration Association) and Julia E. Sullivan (Law Office of Julia Sullivan) for the panel “The Use and Misuse of Artificial Intelligence in Dispute Resolution”.

The panel will delve into the profound impact of AI on dispute resolution, examining how this transformative technology is reshaping traditional processes. James Hosking Joins Panel Discussing “Impossibility” at XVIII International Arbitration Conference in Rio De Janeiro

May 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will speak at the upcoming XVIII International Arbitration Conference in Rio De Janeiro on Tuesday, May 14th.  The conference is focused on “Impossibility in International Arbitration.”

James will join Marie-Isabelle Delleur (Clifford Chance), Andrea Carlevaris (BonelliErede) and Leonardo De Campos Melo (LDCM) for the panel “Court Intervention in Situations Where the Arbitral Tribunal Cannot Exert Its Own Jurisdiction”, and will focus on court intervention in gathering evidence. Andre Marini (Gaillard, Banifatemi & Shelbaya Disputes) will moderate the discussion.

Anibal Sabater to Participate in 2024 AAA Higginbotham Fellows Program

May 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will participate in an industry roundtable discussion at the American Arbitration Association’s Higginbotham Fellows Program on Wednesday, May 8th.

Anibal will join Dana MacGrath (Independent Arbitrator), Robin Abramowitz (Bond Schoeneck & King), Al Feliu (Feliu Neutral Services) and Angela Foster (Law Office of Angela Foster). Participants will hear from arbitrators in commercial, international, employment and construction about their experiences and caseloads.

James Hosking and Silvia Marroquin Speak at 2024 ARIAS Spring Conference

May 2024— Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking and Silvia Marroquin are set to speak at the upcoming 2024 ARIAS Spring Conference taking place May 1st-May 3rd in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Chaffetz Lindsey’s Cia Moss is co-chair of the event.

Silvia Marroquin will join the panel “How Should Arbitrators Address Potential For Settlement With the Parties? Opportunities, Limits and Ethics” on Thursday, May 3rd.  The panel will address and interact with participants on what tools may or may not be appropriate toward fostering settlement and the appropriate times for such actions, including scheduling a “mediation window”, bifurcation of liability and quantum, inquiring whether the parties have discussed settlement, presenting panel questions meant to highlight the risks on both sides, “ArbMed” or “Med-Arb”, other party-agreed arbitrator participation in settlement efforts, ethical limits and approaches of the various arbitral institutions and rules. Additional panelists include David W. Ichel, (X-Dispute LLP), Elaine A. Caprio (Caprio Consulting) and Carlos A. Romero (Post & Romero LLP).

James Hosking will join Carolyn Thomas (AON) for “Hot Spots and Hot Policies: Political Risk Insurance in Today’s Volatile World” on Thursday, May 3rd. The panel will discuss the types of political risk insurance (PRI) available and interaction with other insurance lines, coverage and exclusion issues, and the application to “gray” areas like economic blockades. Speakers will also consider how the existence of PRI coverage may interact with claims brought under investment treaties for governmental expropriation and unlawful interference, as well as with other forms of risk mitigation. In addition, the panel will assess how PRI coverage may affect country risk for purposes of financial reporting and damages calculations.
