Anibal Sabater and May Khoury Co-Author “Economic Sanctions and Arbitration: A Practical Guide for Parties, Counsel and Arbitrators”

November 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater and May Khoury contributed to “Economic Sanctions and Arbitration: A Practical Guide for Parties, Counsel and Arbitrators” recently released by the International Association of Lawyers (UIA).

The guide walks arbitration users through the do’s and don’ts when economic sanctions affect an international arbitration and includes chapters providing an overview on the impact of sanctions on arbitral proceedings, parties, counsel, arbitrators, institutions, third parties, and enforcement proceedings.

Additional authors include Elena Gillis, Marc Henry, Vladimir Khvalei, Silvestre Tandeau de Marsac, Delphine Wietek and Jane Willems.  The editors of the guide are Andrea Carlevaris and Veit Öhlberger.

Anibal Sabater Spoke at the International Association of Lawyers (UIA) 67th Congress

November 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater spoke on two panels at the International Association of Lawyers (UIA) 67th Congress that took place October 25th-October 29th in Rome, Italy.

Anibal joined the Friday afternoon session “Recent Developments in International Arbitration.“ Juliya Arbisman (Steptoe) and Cecilia Carrara (Legance) also sat on the panel with Andrea Carlevaris (BonelliErede) moderating the discussion.

In addition, Anibal moderated the Saturday morning session “What Will Successful Law Firms Look Like in the Future,” which brought together big law and smaller law firm practitioners, as well as in-house lawyers and AI experts, to discuss the current economic, political and technological trends are shaping the practice of law. Anibal moderated the discussion among panelists Kato Aerts (Lydian), Eugenia Castrillon (IE Law School), Monica Crespo (Jus Mundi), Dominik Suoniemi (W. R. Grace & Co.) and Carlo Mastellone (Studio Legale Mastellone).

Aníbal Sabater to Speak at 2023 IBA Annual Conference

October 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Aníbal Sabater will speak at the upcoming 2023 IBA International Bar Association annual conference on Tuesday, October 31st. Anibal will join the 11:15am panel “Current Trends in International and Investment Arbitration in Latin America.”

Aníbal will be joined by María Inés Corrá (Bomchil), Elsa Ortega (Creel Garcia-Cuellar Aiza y Enriquez) and Javier Robalino (Robalino Abogados). The group will discuss the rise of investment and international arbitration in Latin America, the current trends and hot topics. Experts and renowned practitioners from the panel will share their experiences in this arena.

Session chairs include Arturo Alessandri (Alessandri Abogados) and Eleonora Coelho (Eleonora Coelho Sociedade De Advogados).

The event is organized by the Latin American Regional Forum (Lead) and Arbitration Committee.

Chaffetz Lindsey 2023 IBA Annual Conference Delegate Team

October 2023 – Chaffetz Lindsey will be sending a team to the 2023 IBA Annual Conference, which is being held in Paris from October 29th to November 3rd. Peter Chaffetz, James Hosking, Aníbal Sabater, Andreas Frischknecht, Yasmine Lahlou, Caline Mouawad, and Erin Valentine will be in attendance.

During the week, Aníbal will speak Tuesday morning at 11:15am on a panel discussion of “Current trends in international and investment arbitration in Latin America,” which is organized by the Latin American Regional Forum (Lead) and Arbitration Committee. Caline is the workshop chair for the Arbitration Committee’s traditional session that looks into the main developments of the year in investment arbitration called “Highs and lows in investment arbitration” taking place on Thursday at 11:15am.

Chaffetz Lindsey has been actively involved with the IBA over the years. Currently, Andreas is an officer on the IBA Litigation Committee and Caline is Co-Chair of the IBA Investment Arbitration Subcommittee and is a member of the IBA Arbitration Committee’s Task Force on Privilege.

Anibal Sabater to Speak at 2023 Colombia Arbitration Day

September 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will join a panel discussion for the second annual Colombia Arbitration Day on Tuesday, September 19th. Anibal will be featured on the second panel of the day titled “Parallel Proceedings in Arbitration: International Tribunals, Judges and Oversight Bodies,” taking place virtually in Spanish.

Additional panelists include Sofia de Sampaio (Armesto & Asociados), Monica Jimenez Gonzalez (Geopark), and Mairée Urán (Subsecretaría de Relaciones Económicas Internacionales Chile). Lukas Montoya (Lévy Kaufmann-Kohler) will moderate the discussion.

Colombia Arbitration Week (CAW) is an academic event organized with the support of Colombian Very Young Arbitration Practitioners (COLVYAP). CAW provides a specialized and intergenerational forum for discussion around arbitration and its challenges and perspectives in Colombia.

Anibal Sabater to Speak at ICAL 20th Anniversary Conference

August 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will speak at the upcoming ICAL 20th Anniversary Conference in Stockholm, Sweden on August 31st. Anibal will join the Thursday afternoon panel “Rise of the Machines or Sleep Mode: Is International Arbitration Ready for the Technology Revolution?” The group will examine technological advancements that international arbitration is or should be using as well as explore issues that an overreliance on technology could bring.

Panelists include Joel Altschul (EY), Monica Crespo (Jus Mundi), Edward Jansson Stiernblad (Vinge) and Sophie Nappert (3VB).

The international conference taking place August 31st-September 1st will celebrate twenty years of study and research in international arbitration at the Master Program of International Commercial Arbitration Law at Stockholm University. May 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will speak the 2023 Mexico Arbitration Week on Wednesday, May 31st taking place this week in Mexico City, Mexico. Anibal will join Montserrat Manzano (Von Wobeser y Sierra), Andrés Nieto (Norton Rose Fulbright), Enrique Molina (Omni Bridgeway) and Antonio Barrera (Holland & Knight) for the Wednesday morning panel “Arbitraje, Regulaciones ESG y Transición Energética”. Anibal Sabater Appointed Member of International Arbitration Center of Madrid’s Comisión de Recusación

March 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater has been appointed a member of the International Arbitration Center of Madrid (CIAM) Challenge Commission (Comisión de Recusación). The group’s purpose is to dispose of the challenges to arbitrators appointed under CIAM’s Rules whom a party considers lack independence or impartiality.

The group comprises Anibal Sabater, Fernando Mantilla-Serrano, Mercedes Fernández, Luca G. Radicati and Claudia Benavides.

February 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will speak at the 9th Harvard International Arbitration Conference on Thursday, March 2nd. Anibal will join Isabel Fernández de la Cuesta (King & Spalding) and Richard C. Lorenzo (Hogan Lovells) for the 1:30pm panel “Arbitration in the Context of Energy Transition.” Katie Gonzalez (Cleary Gottlieb) will moderate the discussion.

The conference titled “”International Arbitration: Fostering and Adapting to Change” will feature many of the world’s leading practitioners who will be discussing some of the most relevant issues that practitioners are facing in the field.

The event is hosted by the Harvard International Arbitration Association.
